Pacific Islands: State of Emergency

I am attending the EPA Conference on the island of Saipan this week. I came for the Renewable Energy discussions and general requirements as that is what I do for a living with my company. As the second day of the confernce started it was clearly going to be an eye opener on a topic that most of us do not think about on a daily basis.

Global Warming. Yes the dreaded two words that some people still do not believe exists. Trust me the Island Nations of the Pacific feel this every day. There is clear evidence of sea level rising and destruction from the acidic acid levels of the ocean destroying their fresh water supply to the lost homes from Typhoons that although not as frequent to date are far more intensive a direct result of the Global Warming Factor.

This is a problem that the Islands have no known capability to solve. You see, the problem is Carbon Monoxide or CO2. Ninety percent of the Global Warming problem is associated with CO2. The USA and most nations of Europe have enjoyed untethered expansion from an industrial perspective. However, the cost is now being seen live and it is accelerating at an alarming rate with no slow down projected.

If we continue to run the CO2 levels up at the present rate of climb then the Icebergs of Alaska and Greenland will have melted and the Sea Level will have risen 250 feet. Yes, 250 feet. Now it won't happen all at once. But if we turn our heads on the Pacific Islands today and do nothing to curb our out of control desires from an industrial perspective then ALL Nations will suffer the loss of their coastlines and food supplies.

The Western States of the USA are in a drought. This will get to the point of no return and history tells us that everything we are seeing has been seen before. The cycles of life for the planet are crystalizing in our ability to study the past scientifically. CO2 is accelerating our Planet to a point that has not been seen for millions of years. Should we care? Realistically we will all be dead and buried by the time any of this is a disaster on the news front.

Should we care? How can we not care. We have to look at the upcoming Conference in Copenhagen as the Starting Point for all nations to come together and set policies that are Global in scope and start with the complete reversal of our industrial thirst for more stuff. We must find ways to use Renewable Energy of all kinds, Wind, Solar, Geo, Bio Mass...to name a few. We must spend money on getting reflective material on our roof tops NOW. Get all the Old Light Bulbs off the grid completely and move to LED technology which is the best we will see in our lifetimes.

Get rid of all Cars under 30 mgp. Pressure your government for an all Electric Vehicle path that is supported by Renewable Energy sources for the home owners. The technology is available today. The time to act is now. The world awaits the Islands plea for help.

We look forward to your comments.

It is truly sad that these beuatiful islands could eventually disappear and have little if anything they can do to change their fate. The oceans are rising from decades of Industrial Build Up. C02 has long been known to create a negative impact on the evironment and thus contribute to Global Warming.

The real concern is whether or not we have reached the tipping point whereby we could not reverse the destruction of these islands and most coastal property we so covet

When it comes to a day of reckoning the planet has reached that point in time. I was not able to attend this conference but a friend did and came away with hope and fear. The hope was driven by the fact that we do have the technology and Know How to fix the problem and fix it in short order 5-10 years. As compared to the age of the planet of course.

But we have India and China developing their Industrial might and they are pointing a finger at the USA and Europe stating the truth. No one stopped us from burning coal to create energy and polluting the planet which got our nation to where it is today. That's all true.

But he Planet didn't have the knowledge and technology then that it has now. We have evolved. My suggestion would be that the Nations with the clean renewable solutions sell this directly to India and China and help them with their growth and energy issues. The lessor of two evils is accomplished in my mind.

Will the nations of China and India accept Western technology in support of all these claims? China has vast Coal reserves like the USA. Why wont they just turn their nose to everyone and keep mining the dirty energy?
